It's not easy defending Whelan's comments and, when writing this piece, I did wonder if people would think that I'm condoning racism. I'm not, of course, but sometimes we have to be a little more compassionate in the way we treat people. Sadly, we all indoctrinated by the media who always choose the path of least resistance. Outrage is currently in vogue so they are always looking to be outraged. With modern TV so heavily scheduled, with no space in that schedule for debate or opinions beyond the obvious, there's no room to present a more complicated case. Twitter compounds the problem, with only mindless drivel capable of fitting inside 120 characters.

Racism is bad (obviously and it irritates me that I feel that I have to write 'obviously' lest anybody misconstrue my meaning) but making relatively minor indiscretions into something bigger will not help bring racism to an end. I think most people know what Whelan was trying to say. He was awkward and a bit off message but I genuinely believe his heart was in the right place. If an example is made of him, it will not kick racism out of football. I'm pretty certain it will only harden the opinions of many and close their minds to the debate.David Waywellnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3729674823895661245.post-56675148350544159872014-11-24T01:05:01.000-08:002014-11-24T01:05:01.000-08:00I can imagine the scene in a court, you accuse me ...I can imagine the scene in a court, you accuse me of being racist, I will ask you 3 questions, what Is Wigan athletics stadium called, DW stadium, what is the East stand called, the Boston stand (named after a black rugby player), what colour is the captain of Wigan athletic, he is black. Words like 'sexist', 'rapist', 'pedophile', and 'racist' are often used before anybody has been convicted in a court of law. And those labels stick to people and their reputations. They're also often used incorrectly because people are generally too dim to care about definitions. It's the Wikipedia generation. Don't learn anything that you can't look up on the internet should you actually need to know what something means.David Waywellnoreply@blogger.com
